If it were me and that rifle needed a new barrel, I'd probably spin up a 260 remington. It was designed specifically for the Remington Model Seven Magnum rifle, and intended primarily for long-range hunting use. Of course if you follow George Gardner and Pat Sinclair, they will tell you that a 6.5mm can very effectively kill just about anything running around in North America, as long as shot placement is optimal. The 6mm BR is a centerfire cartridge created for benchrest shooting. The cartridge is also known as the 6mm Bench Rest or simply 6 BR, and has also developed a following among varmint hunters because of its efficiency. The 7mm STW had a modest run of popularity that appears to have waned, although it is loaded by all of the major U.S. ammo manufacturers. The 7mm SAUM case holds 7.4 grains less powder than does the 7mm WSM, but the 7mm SAUM has proven to be more efficient than Winchester’s short magnum. In a .308 parent case, a 7mm will obviously perform better from an external ballistics standpoint than a .30 cal. It'll run 130 grain 6.5 mm bullets up close to 3k fps in a 24" barrel at 2.8 OAL. Probably its propensity to burn-out barrels has not helped its reputation. The cartridge will allow seating the bullet to the lands at 3.090" and is ideally suited for medium length actions. The saum sized cases will not work with that bolt. Compare this to the barrel burning magnums with 20+ grains more capacity, and see what we mean. By necking down the .300 RUM to suit the .284 or 7mm projectile, Remington produced a non-belted case with a head diameter that is somewhat larger than belt diameter of original belted numbers. Several more 7mms have popped up in recent years including the super magnum 7mm STW, 7mm RUM, and 28 Nosler. The difference in velocity between the 7mm SAUM cartridge and the 7mm Winchester Short Magnum (WSM) is less than 50 feet per … This is a lot of performance out of a SAUM length case! There are two basic variants of very similar dimensions, known as the 6mm BR Remington and the 6mm Norma BR This means you can almost match the velocities of the 7mm WSM (with the same bullets) using slightly less powder. The medium and big bore magnums have their place as specialty cartridges and it is here that the big case magnums make the most sense. The 7 SAUM is a short-action, magnum cartridges similar to the 7 WSM. A Redundant Confusion of 7mm/280 Cartridges. There were also several shooters using the 7mm SAUM, also known as the 7mm Remington Short Action Ultra Mag, including one in the top 10 and another in the top 25. Mag., it was based on a shortened 300 H&H case. The 7mm RUM was created using the .404 Jeffery case [citation needed] which was also used to develop the .375 RUM.300 RUM, and .338 RUM [citation needed]. Tikka T3 actions are very popular platforms for a Sherman Max build. Despite the above redundant confusion of cartridges shooting .284-inch bullets, that list is not complete. The short action sherman wild cats are great, but they're all based off SAUM. Like the (copycat?) 7mm Rem. 7mm 08 is another good option. After studying the case capacity of the Mashburn, its similarities to the .300 Winchester Magnum as a parent case and reported velocities along with the occasional but hard to find anecdotal notes regarding the 7mm-.300 Win Mag, I settled on the .300 Winchester magnum necked down to 7mm as a basis for my wildcat case design. Remington introduced the 7mm Short Action Ultra Magnum (SAUM) cartridge in 2002 to compete with the 7mm Winchester Short Magnum cartridge. The .308 Winchester is the parent case to familiar cartridges like the .243 Winchester, .260 Remington, 7mm-08 Remington, .338 Federal, ..358 Winchester and all their associate wildcat cartridges and calibers developed from them.
